WeChat Officially Launches the Brand in India; Should Facebook, Whatsapp Be Afraid?

WeChat, the messenger app is still in its nascent stages, but has caught up with veterans like Whatsapp and Viber quickly. WeChat’s multiple features coupled with their strong marketing skills have made the app popular across different markets and helped soar the apps’ popularity.

The app has already become the number one app in most emerging markets in South East Asia. WeChat which entered the Indian market last year experimented with features across different audiences. Developed by Tencent, the Chinese application provider, WeChat grew exponentially in the space of just one year, far quicker than Facebook or Twitter.

The appeal of WeChat is not just the messenger app. The app packs a host of other features. It’s a mini-social networking site coupled with a messenger app. WeChat launched the platform for users in India but also offers a promotional platform to brands. Just like Facebook and Twitter, brands can use the app to interact with fans and build a follower-base.

The app has all functions of Whatsapp, the most preferred messenger app. Additionally, unlike Whatsapp, WeChat also supports video calling and an interesting feature called Live Chat which lets users chat in real-time. The Hold-to-Talk feature eliminates the need to type making it easier to stay connected on the go.

Moments feature lets users have a profile just like Facebook with a display picture, cover image, status updates, options for ‘publicly’ or ‘privately’ sharing images, etc. Users can not just share but even edit pictures using the app, something which no other messenger app permits.

Additionally, the app is not restricted just to contacts on the phone list. Adventurous souls and social butterflies can interact with complete strangers using some of the WeChat's features while mainting their privacy settings at the same time!

While the app is free for users and Dennis Hau, Head of International Product Center, Tencent International  promises the app will stay free forever. However, brands are not as lucky.

WeChat has a brand has launched a strategic plan for India and plans to expand to become the most used app in India. The app faces tough competition as most Indians prefer Whatsapp and are loathe to change to a complete new messenger app system as most contacts and friends use a particular app. Also, there’s a plethora of apps in the Indian market vying for attention all offering different features. Hike, KakaoTalk, Viber, GupShup are just some popular options other than Whatsapp.

WeChat might have ambitious plans for the country but the company is not cooling its heels. Tencent is going all the way and has even roped in popular Bollywood actors Parineeti Chopra and Varun Dhawan as brand ambassadors. Tencent feels the actors have a youth connect and would be perfect for their brand. WeChat is perhaps the first messenger app to have a TV commercial to promote the app!
