Android launchers

Spend more than three minutes with any Android fanboy, and you'll quickly learn that the real beauty of Google's operating system lies in the potential to customize it.

Any problem can be solved by downloading enough apps. Nowhere is that more true than for Android's homescreen - so we've rounded up the best alternative Android launchers for your modding pleasure.

On an Android phone, the launcher is the app responsible for the home screen, the app 'grid', and launching the aforementioned apps. Phones generally come with either the stock Google launcher, or more commonly, a launcher whacked on top by a hardware manufacturer like Samsung.

But, if you don't get on with your phone's default launcher, installing a new one just takes a quick visit to the Google Play Store.

Ahead of WhatsApp-Facebook deal approval, concerns over privacy of users

Facebook bought WhatsApp in a $19 billion deal last month. But the deal is far from done. It is yet to get the approval from various regulatory bodies around the world. On most occasions such deals are approved without any significant delay and that is likely to happen in this case as well. However, this is not stopping from some organisations to raise privacy concerns associated with Facebook acquiring Whatsapp data.

On March 6, a US-based privacy group asked the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to review, and if required block, the Facebook-WhatsApp deal to guard the privacy of over 450 million users who installed the app on their phones.

On March 9, a Competition Commission of India official reportedly said that the organization would meticulously scrutinize the deal.

The privacy concerns over Facebook acquiring WhatsApp are not new.

Three days after Facebook announced that it was buying WhatsApp, a user on Reddit submitted a link — titled "3 WhatsApp alternatives that respect your privacy" — to the website's Android section.

The link scored 99 points, which means around 68% of readers liked it. While the number is minuscule compared to the scale of Reddit, which saw over 112 million unique visitors in February, the link showed some WhatsApp users are worried about their privacy and don't trust Facebook when it comes to handling private and intimate information in their chats.

Meet the Google trekker photographing Indian monuments

Early on a cold February morning, Nishant Nair is walking inside the Taj Mahal complex in Agra. The monument is not yet open to the public. Light fog is still in air, floating over the Yamuna behind the Taj. The sun is yet to cast its light on the world famous white dome.

Nair is on a special mission. With permission from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) he is using a 4-feet-high backpack, which weighs around 18 kilograms, to click thousands of images of the Taj so that Google can create a virtual replica of the world famous monument.

Beginning in 2013
Nair is part of the Google team that is photographing 100 monuments in India. The Qutub Minar, which was photographed in October 2013, was first. The project, launched by Google in collaboration with ASI, is an attempt to put India's biggest historical sites on the web. Google is photographing the notable sites across the world for the last few years. It has photographed Burj Khalifa, Eiffel Tower, Mt Everest and several other sites.

Suren Ruhela, geo product manager for Google India, told TOI that when Google approached ASI in the middle of 2013 with a proposal to photograph historic sites, the response was rather muted.

Google kicked off its Street View project in India in 2011. It put the special cars, which have the cameras mounted on top of them, to photograph streets, on the roads in Bangalore. But within days, the Bangalore police asked the company to stop the photography. Cops cited "security concerns" even though the permission for the photography had been granted. Google and Indian government then again started talks on the Street View. Those talks are yet to reach a logical end.
Given this background, the ASI officials approached the monument project cautiously. "But we showed them how we have photographed the sites in other countries and how those virtual monuments have allowed many more people to access them, even if only on the web. After a while ASI officials started warming up to the idea," said Ruhela.

"As we talked more, we found ASI officials enthusiastic about putting India's best monuments online so that people from across the world can access them easily. Photographing a monument and creating its virtual image is a great way to preserve the culture of the country," added Ruhela.

Creating a picture-perfect and accurate imagery of a monument is no easy feat. Google knows that and has created a tool specifically build to do one thing - photographing a monument in a way that captures a 360-degree view.

Google started taking photos of streets in 2007 with cameras mounted on cars. The project kicked off in the US. But as the company rolled out the Street View programme across the world and improved the technology used in cameras, it added several other types of vehicles in the mix. The cameras were fitted on bikes, cycles and other vehicles. With Street View proving to be popular with web users, Google employees started exploring how the technology can be used for other services.

In 2010, Amit Sood, who is currently director of the Google Cultural Institute, came up with the idea of photographing museums with Street View. He used his "20% time" - at Google employees can use 20% of their working time to explore projects that personally interest them - to give shape to the plan to photograph museums.

Museums were just a beginning. The program was later expanded to historical sites and places like Grand Canyons, where the Street View cars cannot go. But to enable photography in tight spots, Google redesigned the camera used on the Street View cars and created the trekker - a 18kg backpack made up of metal, plastic and cloth that a Google employee or a volunteer can wear and roam around a place to create virtual imagery.

Now online images of Indian heritage sites to woo tourists

ASI director general Pravin Srivastava said the remaining 70 heritage sites of the country will be made online towards this year end.

Sitting next to their desktops, people across the world will now be able to explore iconic Indian world heritage sites like the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar and Red Fort, besides other monuments.

Apart from getting access to high resolution pictures of 30 such old monuments manifesting the aesthetic sensibilities of the erstwhile rulers, people living abroad would get vital information on these monuments which are an interesting combination of Persian and Islamic architecture.

Along with high resolution pictures, the written text would explain why these monuments have become national treasures and their relevance in contemporary times. The underlying objective behind the whole exercise is to encourage prospective foreign tourists to visit the country.

Unveiling the online panoramic imagery of heritage sites at the Capital’s Safdarjung Tomb, a sandstone and marble mausoleum, Union Culture Minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch said: “With the release of these new panoramic images, it is now possible for billions of people across the world to see and explore our magnificent heritage like the to take a walk at the Rock Cut Jain Temple, marvel at the Nagarjuna Konda Buddhist stupas and relive history at Fatehpur Sikri.”

The Minister said the objective behind the partnership between ASI and Google is to create a dynamic, immersive online experience by which the people within our country and around the world can understand the engage more of India’s diverse cultural heritage.

Ms. Katoch used the occasion to urge educational institutions to have one period related to culture so that students can understand the significance of protecting and preserving our monuments.

“The need of the hour is that schools have periods for every class devoted exclusively to cultural heritage. This would increase awareness among the children about the need to protect monuments rather than draw and defacement monuments. Now, that the 360-degree online imagery of 30 heritage sites are available, it would give a fillip to tourism. At the click of a button, foreigners can access these sites and plan their trip to India.”

According to ASI director general Pravin Srivastava, the remaining 70 heritage sites of the country will be made online towards this year end.

What's WhatsApp? A messages service that spans borders, devices

What in the world is WhatsApp?

The online messaging platform has been catching on for a few years with younger users and international sets of friends, but a much larger audience noticed it on Wednesday, when Facebook Inc said it had agreed to pay $19 billion for the service.

It is a phone and mobile device app to send text, video and picture messages, and 450 million people use it monthly, some 200 million more than Twitter, according to numbers from the companies.

And it's adding a million users daily, which caught Facebook's eye.

WhatsApp works across different types of phones, across borders, and without ads. Unlike texts, there is no per-message charge, and there is no fee for international messages, which has helped make it popular outside the United States; WhatsApp charges a 99 cent annual subscription fee, which is waived for the first year.

Customers download the app, type in their phone number, and verify with a code sent by text.

While WhatsApp encrypts communication and does not store messages on its computers, satisfying some privacy concerns, it also prompts new users to allow the app access their address books, prompting another set of privacy issues.

WhatsApp faces a number of rivals, including Rakuten Inc's Viber, Naver Corp's Line and Tencent Holdings Ltd's WeChat. All are popular among young people, a demographic that Facebook has been losing out on in recent years and that are likely part of the draw for the company's purchase.

While kids may love the messaging, not all parents do. Mobile messaging is much more difficult for parents to monitor than Facebook, for instance, which has created new worries.

WhatsApp and Facebook both say the messaging service will maintain its independence once the deal goes through

Samsung begins move away from Android? Next Galaxy Gear smartwatch to run on Tizen

Despite the poor show put up by the Galaxy Gear, Samsung hasn’t given up hope on its smartwatch offerings, and is all set to launch a new version of the device.

While the original Gear is an Android-based smartwatch, the Gear 2, which will also be known as the Galaxy Band, is likely to run on Samsung’s own Tizen OS. People familiar with the matter told CNet that Samsung would unveil the new Gear smartwatch at the Mobile World Congress and it will run company’s Tizen software.

We’ve been hearing about Samsung’s Tizen-based devices for some time now. The smartphone was initially slated for launch in 2013, but later reports claimed that Samsung has pushed the launch to 2014. Now, news has it that the company will be unveiling the Tizen-based smartwatch along with some other Tizen products, most probably a phone and camera.

According to the report the company is also developing fitness bands. This could also mean there is a possibility that the Galaxy Band could be a new device altogether and run on Android, while the Tizen-based Gear 2 could be an improved version of Gear. Samsung refused to respond to the rumours about the Tizen-based smartwatch by stating it doesn’t want to comment on rumours and speculations.
US not on Samsung's map for Tizen any time soon

Samsung had kickstarted the year by teasing us about its upcoming Gear successor. Later rumours pointed at a fitness-focused smartwatch dubbed the Galaxy Band, which could be a differentiator from the defamed Gear series. The Galaxy Band is expected to be loaded with sensors for capturing data on motion, pressure and temperature, all of which are essential for fitness trackers. The device will connect with Samsung Galaxy devices (and presumably other phones) via Bluetooth LE.

A previous report had also claimed that the final public release of the Tizen and smartphones running the OS will only be in Q3 of 2014. But now it seems that the company won’t wait that long. This could be prompted in part, by the not-so-satisfactory sales of the Galaxy S4, which has caused the company to push forward with the Galaxy S5, which is also likely to launch at its  “Unpacked 5″ event this week.

Is Samsung Trying To Dump Google?

After Google acquired Motorola, Samsung may have been pushed to believing in building its own ecosystem.  However, the twist in the tale came this year when Google sold Motorola to Lenovo.

Last year J.K. Shin, Samsung CEO had said how he plans Tizen to be everywhere, and looks like this is just the beginning. However, at the Unpacked event, Android could still take centre-stage if the company unveils the Galaxy S5.

Android in 79 percent of smartphones sold in 2013, iOS share falls: SA

The Google Android system was used on 78.9 percent of smartphones sold globally in 2013, a survey showed Wednesday.

The report by the research firm Strategy Analytics confirms the ascendancy of Android, which has extended its lead over Apple's iOS, which is used on the iPhone.

"There is little doubt that 2013 was the year of Android," said Neil Mawston, analyst with the consultancy.

"However, Android's annual growth rate slowed to 62 percent in 2013, its lowest level in the platform's history. We expect Android's growth to slow further in 2014 due to market saturation, and rivals like Microsoft or Firefox will be ready to pounce on any signs of a major slowdown for Android this year."

The report said Apple's global market share slipped to 15.5 percent in 2013 from 19.4 percent in 2012. Meanwhile Windows Phone  grabbed third place with a 3.6 percent share, up from 2.7 percent a year earlier.

"Microsoft is now firmly established as the smartphone industry's third major ecosystem, shipping 35.7 million units worldwide," Mawston said.

"However, the Windows Phone platform is still struggling to gain traction in the low-tier and premium-tier smartphone categories and they remain serious weaknesses that Microsoft will need to address in 2014."

Strategy Analytics earlier this week said global smartphone sales rose 41 percent last year to 990 million. Samsung sold 319.8 million units to take 32.2 percent, up from 30.4 percent in 2012.

A report Monday by IDC said the total was just over one billion, with Samsung the largest vendor at 31.3 percent

Here’s how to check if your Gmail account has been hacked

With news of more hacks and leaks emerging every day, its pretty safe to say that you’re not necessarily paranoid if you constantly worry about your email being hacked. What with online vigilante hacker groups like the SEA and Anonymous leaking millions of passwords onto the web, and the NSA snooping on the email accounts of even world leaders, the chances that your mail could be hacked are not really that slim. But the good news is that if you have a Gmail account, you can easily check whether or not you have been hacked.

Google has provided users with tools right within the Gmail inbox that can help keep your account secured. Here’s how it works:

To check if your account has been targeted and hacked into without your knowledge, you need to log into your Gmail account using a desktop browser.

Now scroll down to the bottom of your inbox and locate a link called “Details”. When you click on it, a pop-up window will appear, and it will show you a detailed list of the last ten times you – or anyone else –has accessed your account. It will also show you not just when your account was accessed but also how it was viewed. You’ll know if the inbox was opened using an email app, browser, smartphone app and the IP address through which it was accessed.

If you see a suspicious device or IP address, you may want to change your password as soon as possible.

To strengthen the security on your Gmail account, you can even turn the two-factor authentication system on. You can store your IP addresses of the various computers and devices you use to access Gmail, in order to ensure nothing fishy is going on around your account.

While Google has been very particular about ensuring account safety from sleuths, it has been going through a rough couple of weeks with Gmail. An outage late last week caused about 10 percent of Google’s global users to lose access to their Gmail accounts for a good 30 minutes or so. This week, it was also revealed that a bug affecting certain Gmail apps was marking out wrong messages to be deleted or sent into spam folders.

Aakash 4 project: Dell, Intel, HP, Micromax among 17 companies in fray

Dell, Acer, HCL Infosystems, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft and Intel are among 17 companies that have shown interest in developing the next version of the government's ambitious low-cost tablet Aakash-4 whose tender will close on January 28.

Canada-based Datawind, which supplied the first 1 lakh Aakash tablets in India, too, is in the race and is competing with other players, including domestic manufacturers like Micromax, WishTel and ITI , in two areas: Price and sourcing norms under the tendering process.

Unlike in the past, the government this time is looking for multiple vendors and, hence, many bidders are planning to form consortia to jointly manufacture these devices. Moreover, to promote local manufacturing, the government has mandated that Aakash be manufactured here with 30% value addition by March 2014 and 35% after that.

Besides, the government is not waiving off customs duties for Aakash 4 due to which the price of the tablet may breach the Rs 2,500 mark. “The government wants an open source operating system so that it does not depend on the intellectual property of others. All participants are talking to each other for their expertise and getting together to produce Aakash 4,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, CEO, Datawind. Datawind has a manufacturing facility in Amritsar with a capacity to produce 5 lakh units per month.

Tuli added that his firm manufactures LCD and touchscreens in India, which is more than half the cost of the devices, due to which he makes profits despite running on tight margins.

The Aakash 4 tablet has one gigahertz of RAM, Bluetooth, a dual-core processor and second-generation phone calling facility -- specifications decided by a 12-member committee comprising representatives of department of electronics and information technology, C-DAC, IIT Bombay and directorate general of supplies and disposal, which has floated the tender. The tablet will also support WiFi, 2G, 3G and 4G connectivity and come with 4GB of internal storage, external memory card slot with storage capacity of up to 32 GB, bluetooth and front camera.

Aakash 1 got off to a poor start as it was promised to be made available to students at a subsidised rate of Rs 1,130, but got embroiled in a controversy regarding specifications between Datawind and IIT Jodhpur.

Reliance Jio tests 4G network, Jio Television at IIT Mumbai Techfest

Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd on Friday tested its 4G network at the Techfest event in IIT Mumbai campus, by running trials of video calls and Jio Television service, among others.

According to the company, Jio Television has a feature that eliminates the need for recording content.

"LTE is about Learn to Earn. More than 78 percent of Indian content comes from outside. We must work towards shifting content to India. We should look at creating Health Exchanges to create affordable Healthcare supported by broadband," RJIL's President for Strategy and Products, Mathew Oommen said at the event.

RJIL is country's only pan-India 4G spectrum holder.

The company also deployed Wi-Fi networks at select locations in the campus. Visitors will be able to experience benefit of high speed wireless connectivity for hand held devices (smart phones and tablets) over a blend of LTE and Wi-Fi networks.

A company executive while explaining products at the event, said RJIL services are under trial and will be substantially refined as Jio gets ready for "its commercial launch".

Jio will also be using the Techfest to conduct trials of some consumer 'beta' testing experience so as to improve the commercial product through the feedback they receive from customers.

The company at the event demonstrated Live TV and video on demand, with HD viewing experience. Live TV has 16 HD channels and total 101 channels. Video on demand has more than 400 movies.

Talking about Jio Television service, an executive said: "Catch-up TV with 7 days of stored content for each channel complements the viewing experience and eliminates the need to remember to record your favourite show.

The company at the event also demonstrated 3D TV experience and Ultra HD Video Experience on its 4G network.

Are fruits a good breakfast substitute?

Most of us rely on fruits for 'healthy breakfast substitutes' without really checking up on how healthy that is.

Do you always end up eating a piece of fruit for breakfast, due to lack of time? Many of us, though being aware of the importance of breakfast, tend to avoid eating a healthy breakfast.

The basic excuse we give to avoid a healthy breakfast is 'lack of time'. But if you feel that by adding fruits for breakfast you will get a healthy breakfast, then you need to read what Ms. Eileen Canday - Chief Dietician at Breach Candy Hospital says...

She says, "Essentially, it (fruits for breakfast) affects your body by not giving you all the vitamins and minerals you need to make it through your day."

On the other hand, when you have a complete breakfast you not only get vitamin C, but you also get calcium, fiber, and protein. This helps better prepare your body for the day's activities.

This leads us to staying powerful throughout the day. If a piece of fruit doesn't have enough nutrition, how could it possibly keep you full until your next meal? It's only when you combine fruit with high fiber breakfast foods such as oatmeal, wheat, or even bran, you will stay full longer.

When you add more fiber to your breakfast, you're able to better ward off hunger pains. When you combine these high fiber foods with fruit, you get a breakfast that has more of the nutrition your body needs.

Of course, the most important reason a breakfast of fruit isn't enough is because you aren't consuming sufficient calories or protein. Breakfast is the most significant meal of the day.

By consuming more calories first thing in the morning, you are better able to work off those calories throughout the day. This is a much enhanced option than consuming most of your calories in the evening.

Protein is essential to keeping you full for longer as well. A breakfast that lacks protein will have you feeling hungry by noon, even earlier.

So save fruits as mid-day snacks or add-ons for meals, but avoid using fruits as breakfast substitutes. Find 5-10 minutes to eat a nutritious well-balanced healthy breakfast, and you'll be in better control of your weight and health.
