Indian mobile service market set to grow at 6%

The mobile services market in India is said to grow at over 8% to reach Rs 1.2 trillion in 2013 as against Rs 1.1 trillion 2012.

Market research and advisory firm Gartner has said that mobile connections is forecasted to grow at over 11% from 712 mn connections (2012) to 770 million (2013). “The mobile market in India will continue to face challenges if average revenue per unit (ARPU) does not grow significantly,” Shalini Verma, principal research analyst at the advisory firm said.

She added that the country will account for as much as 12% of the worldwide mobile connections if the prevailing conditions remained the same. However, she said that this would amount to only 2% of worldwide mobile services revenue (in constant USD) in 2013. With the government proposing to do away with national roaming charges mobile broadband would be vital for service providers, she said.
